Five Ways to Dress Up That Pretzel Bun from City Bread

Since 1948, City Bread has been putting bread on the table. The company prides itself on using only natural souring agents to give their loaves a unique—and downright delicious— flavour. Their breads and buns are staples at many long-standing Manitoba restaurants including Nathan Detroit’s Sandwich Pad, The Half Moon Drive In, King & Bannatyne, InFerno’s Bistro and Pony Corral. And a loaf of City Bread rye is almost a fixture in the homes of bread-loving Manitobans.

In addition to rye, pumpernickel, Irish, seed, multigrain and sprouted loaves, City Bread’s most artisan product just may be its Gourmet Pretzel Buns. With their unique chewy crust and a sprinkle of sesame seeds, they lend themselves to some deliciously unique creations. We took a few into the kitchen and came up with these ideas—but please feel free to create your own masterpiece.

The Sweet Stack

We start with a classic French toast recipe featuring farm fresh eggs, cold milk and a splash of vanilla. Slices of pretzel bun are grilled to golden brown then topped with a fresh blueberry syrup and a dollop of cinnamon whipped. The crowning glory is a sprig of fresh mint.

The Benny Bun

Because everyone loves a classic eggs Benedict dish, we’ve built this one on an open-faced pretzel bun and added avocado spread, smoked wild salmon, over easy eggs and honey mustard hollandaise sauce. One is a generous serving; but two is better.

Heaven in a Bread Bowl

Perhaps the perfect trio of ingredients when it comes to satisfying soups, this hearty concoction features cheese, bacon and potato in a creamy broth. It’s topped with crispy bacon bites and chives. Best of all, diners can tear away and nibble on the bun as the bowl gets emptied.

Once Around the Garden

Looking for something a little lighter than your average burger? We start with a hearty black bean burger and top it with some seriously flavourful additions including mashed avocado spread, lettuce, red onions, roasted bell peppers and a sweet corn relish.

Vietnam on a Bun

It’s the culmination of two cultural favourites! This is the result when a traditional Vietnamese banh mi sandwich meets southern style pulled pork on a bun. The pork gets its deep rich flavours from Chinese five spice and the burger is topped with lettuce and Asian slaw for a touch of freshness.
