Exchange Pie Party a Real Slice
Zachary is a 10-year-old who loves a triangle-shaped treat.
He’s also a kid who has had to deal with a lot in his young life. Zachary has a rare genetic disorder called Dravet Syndrome, which leads to frequent seizures, especially in extreme temperatures.
It’s one of the reasons his family has been unable to travel together. With his condition now stable, that’s about to change. With a little help from the Dream Factory and the Exchange District Pharmacy behind him, a dream trip is now on the horizon.
Zachary’s mom, Amanda, says anything in pie form is his favourite. The Exchange District Pharmacy staff took that tidbit and came up with Zachary’s Pie Party, a fundraiser taking place from 1 to 3 p.m. this Saturday, September 21 at Old Market Square. Zachary will be in the mix trying pies from participating businesses including Bodegos, BDI, Good Buds Bakery, King’s Head, Miss Browns, Vicky’s, Chosabi and the Winnipeg Free Press Cafe. Party guest will be able to try the pies with a donation. There will also be games to play and entertainment throughout the afternoon.
Zachary’s other love – aside from pie – is the outdoors, which will be at the heart of the family’s explorations during his dream trip to Vancouver. The itinerary includes a kayaking tour, a seaplane trip to Tofino, and a visit to the Vancouver Aquarium.
The Dream Factory, the charitable organization behind Zachary’s family adventure, is dedicated to fulfilling dreams for kids who are battling life-threatening illnesses. The Manitoba-based foundation ensures all of the funds they raise support children here.
For Ryan Chan, the owner of the Exchange District Pharmacy, pulling together the details of a Pie Party and getting behind the work of organizations like the Dream Factory are an important part of contributing to the community.
“We see firsthand how people struggle with health issues in our role every day,” said Chan. And while they help through the medications and advice they dispense, something that brings a smile to the face of a child and their family is important, too. Pies are a sweet way to make it happen.
